Apparently there is a municipal by-law banning the sale of street food has been on the books since the 50s. I always enjoyed having my NYC hot dog or roasted peanuts when I went down to the Big Apple for a long weekend but I have to admit I was pretty happy Montreal was free of a hot dog cart on every corner. Back then street food was junk food.

But now street food is the new chic dinner outing amongst the big cities foodie world. Parks have dedicated weekends where the best street food vendors sell their tasty small sized treats in a group. Cities that allow street vendors have seen the quality of the dishes rise, it’s a dog eat dog cut throat competition now to impress your customers and have them come back.

But not in Montreal, or are the times a changing? Queue the entrance of Grumman ’78, a taco truck that can operate during events when hired by the event organizers. This suggested loop in the law was allowed by City Hall. So if you want to hire Grumman ’78 for an event and have them sell their tacos on the street…that is OK. I have enjoyed their tacos twice: once at a cookbook launch event and once at the Food Court @ Foodlab, an event that was organized by Grumman ’78 of course.

Setting up shop on the now deserted stretch of Saint-Laurent street between Sainte-Catherine and René-Lévesque (due to a business offices/condo political fiasco), at the Place de la Paix urban square, the Food Court @ Foodlab took place on September 30th 2011. I went there with another wonderful foodie friend of mine, Johanne. Here is a sampling of what we enjoyed…

A Grumman ’78 taco of course! The menu changes all the time and today it was curried goat. It was so finger liking good. With this taco we ordered each a hibiscus juice and we shared a gooseberry cheese cake. Who else would think of gooseberry for a cake! I love the white picnic tables set up to eat our goods.

L’Expérience Kangourou is run by these 2 wacky dudes! I first hear about them about 3 years back when the dinner group went to the Mondial Gourmand. Back then allt hey served was exotic kangaroo meat. If you have not tried it I urge you to taste this succulent meat. They had kangaroo on the menu but we decided to try the other 2 meats….

muskox on the left - seal on the right

The first was seal, double verdict: gross! If you like liver you will adore it, if you hate liver don’t even try. It had a strong iron taste with a meat texture. But the second meat oh so made up for it, we had muskox which is also an Arctic animal. Now this was heavenly meat, a perfect marbling of fat and muscle nicely grilled up. I wanted a full steak after.

Next we shared a very nice pulled turkey sandwich from Pas d’cochon dans mon salon, which translates into No pigs in my Living Room, what an awesome name.

no comment!

We followed it up with delicious meatballs from Nora Gray. I just love to witness to what extent my friends will go to make a good pic for the blog when I make a request!

Still sometime a challenge for me when it comes to acquired tastes, Curtis Vargo did not disappoint with wonderful fresh oysters. Oh Curtis, LOVE the apron!

After all these small dishes I think a dessert is well deserved. From la Dinnette Nationale we tasted 3 shortbread cookies: white peaches and anise seeds, goat cheese and hazelnuts, and both our favorite chocolate and black olives. I know it sounds like a weird combo but I was quite a revelation…just make sure to use only dark chocolate.

And the finale of our foodlab experience were soft and addictive homemade caramels: one honey flavored the other fleur de sel. Fleur de sel was the winner but it was a close call!

Our mini street food event was declared a big success, Johanne and I had a blast exploring the various food here. I hope there is many more such event to come in Montreal. Do you have street vendors in your city?

If you ladies want to celebrate with a great guilt free dessert let me suggest the following recipe: a healthy chocolate pudding. It is so simple, I know the recipe by heart and so do not remember the source except " data-image="http://www.cheapethniceatz.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/sichuan-012.jpg" data-site="Cheap Ethnic Eatz">
<div style="margin:5px 0px 5px 0px" id="linksalpha_tag_1436114440" class="linksalpha-email-button" data-url="http://www.cheapethniceatz.com/2011/10/17/guilt-free-chocolate-pudding-mortimer-winners-and-film-marathon-recap/" data-text="Guilt Free Chocolate Pudding, Mortimer Winners and Film Marathon Recap" data-desc="I have the two winning names in hand for the big 75$ cool kitchen gift baskets winners!
Congratulations Tasty Trix and Rituparna

If you ladies want to celebrate with a great guilt free dessert let me suggest the following recipe: a healthy chocolate pudding. It is so simple, I know the recipe by heart and so do not remember the source except that it was from a vegetarian cookbook. So yes this recipe is vegetarian and dairy free. The base of the pudding is silken tofu. Unless you are an ultra fussy eater you will not even taste the tofu plus the texture will delightful.

Ξ Guilt Free Chocolate Pudding Ξ

1 block of silken tofu (300 gr)

1/4 cocoa powder

1/4 sugar

1 ground cardamom pod (other substitutes 1/4 tsp cinnamon, a pinch of cayenne, etc)

Put all the ingredients in a food processor or blender. Blend until the mixture is smooth. Spoon into 3 dessert dishes and refrigerate at least an hour before serving. Makes 3 servings.

I’ve tried to skip the blending part once and just mix by hand….not the same and lumpy, do blend it for top results.

Each serving is a mere 128 calories, 4 gr of fat, 21 gr of carbs and 7 gr of protein.

And let me tell you I will really need a guilt free dessert after I finish all the leftovers in the fridge, especially the pies, from the CEE Food Film Marathon I hosted the Saturday at my place.

It was declared a success by all that attended and lots of non perishable food was donated plus I raised a bit of money from the raffle too.

The prizes were set

The screen was set

And there were a many guests brewing in the kitchen.

The lights were off for the presentations

I’ll tell you more about this store, the contest and where the name came from in a bit at the bottom of this post. But first I want to share my latest cooky kitchen experiments: Homemade Spruce and Jamaican Ginger Beers. These 2 unique beverages are perfect for toasting a quirky store’s 10th birthday.

Don’t let the word beer throw you off, these are non-alcoholic but fizzy soft drinks. The idea for the Spruce beer was a light bulb moment after my Mastic Ice Cream post when I compared Mastic’s flavor to Spruce Beer…which apparently not a lot of people were familiar with. Yep I found an online recipe on the Daring Kitchens forum by Audax Artifex.

And yes I made my own extract. I went to my park and identified a Spruce. See I took a pic from my balcony to show you the conifer in question! How do you know you have a Spruce conifer? If the twig carries its needles singly and the actual needle has four sides and, thus, rolls easily between your fingers, it’s a Spruce. Pine needles cluster and Firs have 2 sided flat needles. This beer is not as overpowering as the fake flavored one you by in stores.

Ξ Spruce Beer Ξ

Ingredients

1 cup of sugar

¼ teaspoon of baker’s yeast, in powder form

40 grams of outer twigs of spruce fir

1 tablespoon of hops

a 2-litre soda bottle with a screw cap, thoroughly cleaned and completely dry inside

Directions

Using a funnel, pour the sugar into the bottle and then pour in the yeast. The yeast must be ground for best result, I whizzed mine in a coffee grinder. If you skip this step your soft drink will be less bubbly. Shake bottle well to mix.

Make you extract by bringing to a boil your spruce fir twigs and hops in 500ml of water and simmer to reduce until you have 1 tablespoon of extract remaining, if it is very sticky even better.

Again with funnel, pour in beer extract and then fill bottle half full with water from tap.

Remove funnel and swirl contents in bottle until the sugar has dissolved.

Fill bottle with water until there is approximately a one inch gap at the top and screw cover on tightly.

Let bottle sit at room temperature for 12 to 48 hours or until the bottle feels hard. The gas has expanded.

Store in refrigerator and chill thoroughly. Loosen cap VERY VERY SLOWLY allow gas to escape and avoid liquid fizzing over.

Normal Ginger Ale makes me nauseous. I hate the stuff. Not sure if it is the taste or an associated memory of my mom giving me flat ginger ale when I was in bed for a week with a major flu. But one day I bought a can of Jamaican Ginger Beer, there was a rooster on the can. The very spicy and intense ginger taste totally caught me off guard, I was hooked. I found this recipe on The personal blog of Giles Paterson. It is fabulous, strain the ginger out if you like before serving but I like having a little bit in there to chew.

Ξ Jamaican Ginger Beer Ξ

Ingredients

1 cup of sugar

¼ teaspoon of baker’s yeast, in powder form

1½ to 2 tablespoons of grated ginger

1 lemon

a 2-litre soda bottle with a screw cap, thoroughly cleaned and completely dry inside

Directions

Using a funnel, pour the sugar into the bottle and then pour in the yeast. The yeast must be ground for best result, I whizzed mine in a coffee grinder. If you skip this step your soft drink will be less bubbly. Shake bottle well to mix.

Extract the juice from one lemon. Mix the grated ginger and lemon juice together in a cup.

Again with funnel, pour in ginger/lemon mixture and then fill bottle half full with water from tap.

A few important notes for both recipes: a) if the pressure builds too much your bottle could explode. Place the bottle in the fridge overnight as this halts the yeast and stops the bottle exploding; b) you will notice that the basic procedures for making the sodas are identical so go ahead and experiment with flavors; c) no the ginger beer is neither radioactive nor does it glow in the dark as the pictures lead to believe; d) yes is will be carbonated almost like a soft drink…the natural way; e) until you really get the hang of opening it without making a huge mess….open your bottles outside. Trust me on this one !!!!!

Welcome to Mortimer Snodgrass! Located at 56 Notre-Dame W you will find a gem of a store when you need to buy a gift for a friend or a party….and you will leave getting a couple of extra items for yourself. They have a bit of everything: accessories, pets , balloons, spa beauty products, kids, decor, toys, office and an impressive kitchen area. The outside is adorable with Old Montreal charm, the entrance great you with a larger then life mosaic store logo..I believe made out of Jelly Beans. And the name, where did they come up with Mortimer Snodgrass?

Mortimer is the owner’s 11 year old rescued mutt. There is yellow lab in there and the rest is for anyone to guess! He is the store mascot and when he was younger he came to work every day greeting customers. Explaining Snodgrass is a whole other ball game, literally. One of the owners is a huge baseball fan and he knew of a little known baseball player named Chappy Snodgrass who played for Baltimore Orioles in 1901. Mortimer Snodgrass, it works!

Can you guess what purpose in the kitchen my whale has? No hints we’ll see in a bit. The inside has a loft industrial feel a bit, but not in a modern exaggerated way. It’s really the shell of the store. The store’s colors are a nice pale blue with a calm orange. This is the store where you will find that unusual item you cannot find anywhere else: the ice mold to make those ice vodka shot glasses, a guitar shape silicone spatula, a blood red bath gel in a drip bag like you would see in the hospital, a cool pet treat for your pouch, fun and educational toys for kids no one else will have, neoprene designer lunch bags. And on and on and on!

I got to take a few items home to to play, oops cook, with. The first is the whale can opener. Yep the irony of opening a can of tuna with a whale that will be served to my cats…too funny. Amazing can opener by the way, made by Kuhm Rikon from Switzerland. I also got a very fashionable extra-long protective oven mitt made by Built, you know the kind that won’t still burn you threw like a cheap mitt. And finally the coolest dish brush dude ever. Dirty dishes watch out cause I will rock on while scrubbing you. Fun, quirky and all practical!I bet you would love to get you hands on some of these cool things.

This was actually their 10th year!

There were neat kiosks for Japanese items and official Matsuri souvenirs, a games area, lots of traditional Japanese cuisine food kiosks, and 2 performance stages dedicated to martial art and traditional performances like dances, Taiko drums and much more. Not only was the festival a thrill already I got to enjoy it with two very special friends: Valerie of The Chocolate Bunny who is a local food blogger and a friend, as well as the visiting Mary of Mary Mary and Culinary from Ottawa. It was a lot of fun to share such ethnic foods with fellow bloggers.

I will now let you enjoy the pictures of our day there with a few comments when a food is in the picture. But first enjoy this (shaky) video of a Taiko performance, I love these drums. Oh you should check out Valerie’s post on this outing too, she has great pics of performances I did not snap.

I am toying with the idea of a small contribution fund raising effort too for some food related Montreal organization and maybe get a few sponsors to donate food or cookbooks/ingredients/items for prizes during the marathon. Would you like to donate something? contact me at worldethnicfood at hotmail dot com.

And yes these are all friends, remember I had a dinner group for 4 years where 500 ish members came and went so I made lots of real friends in there. Look I even have a logo ha ha:

And now for my Major Rant:

This related to a group on facebook I belong to. I need to BITCH.

So this group was started by a food blogger and is exclusively for food bloggers in Montreal city. Fantastic! Except that like 80% of them work in marketing/media/promotion, etc…aside from their personal blog. So most of them get invited to all the media events and I mean all of them. I call them the elite club. I get plenty of invites and I don’t need to be invited to everything…but they seem to be rubbing it in everyone’s face in a subtle way at times. Most topics there start off with: Who got invited to….But then things took a weird turn this week.

- Chef Gordon Ramsy bought, revamped and opened up a restaurant in Montreal this week called Laurier Gordon Ramsy. I got my reservation with friends coming soon! Anyways in this facebook group someone posted a link to an article in Montreal’s major french newspaper where the journalist wrote about why do we all of a sudden have a few international chefs come here, put their cooking paw in a resto and claim that Montreal has been put now on the International food map. Hello, we are on of the top food cities! This got a huge debate going in the group.

- A few weeks ago some people founded an association for Quebec food bloggers with an actual statement and everything. Like an official association for food bloggers? Ok fine why not, I have a rough estimate that there are about 100 food bloggers in Montreal alone. But again more then half the comity who have their own blog…..work in PR, communications, media, etc. Oh so very objective…NOT.

- And the last straw that broke the camel’s back: a big discussion was started after someone suggested we should establish a comity that would review Montreal food blogs and give them a stamp of approval (perhaps a logo) that WE ARE AUTHENTIC AND HAVE INTEGRITY in our blogs.

W———-T———-F ???????????? Have they all completely lost their freaking minds? We are hobby food bloggers! I may get in trouble for my next statement: most of these bloggers in this group REVIEW food, they don’t post recipes they make AND most of them are francophone….the anglophone bloggers kind of take a back seat. Why? There has to be a psychological angle here somewhere (which I have my opinions on but this is not the place for it…and let me precise I am Francophone first, Anglophone second)

I broke down and really gave my opinion today in that group and wrote the following (translated…of course I wrote it in French there):

I write my blog because I am passionate in my interest for great food. I rarely do restaurant or product critiques now, very occasionally but there is nothing wrong with it either. I mostly cook and I share my recipes. I get the occasional invite to a food media event or launch. I never feel compelled to make a follow-up afterwards, only if I want to. I do not want to know anything about being in a milieu where I could be judged for it. I find the PR houses could open their doors a little wider for those who are invited to events since it is always the same people who are invited…an elite few, no? There are at least 30 (60) other bloggers in Montreal which are never invited. I do not care really what the world media writes on Montreal or our view of food….. it lasts 5 minutes and people forget.

I do not want to bitch so grandiosely, a gift I have sometimes and now I am pumped (sorry nothing personal), but there are a number of members in this group who never speak yet chat with me…right now we are speechless.

If you are one of the few who make your livelihood with your blog … set up your rules of etiquette but under a RECOGNIZED professional order only, I have no problem with that.

But if your blog is a hobby that creates a little mad money…..can we please take ourselves a little less seriously?

Am I exaggerating, am I overly emotional about this or do you see a problem here to? Do you have such issues in your home city with fellow food bloggers?

We had also a fabulous pot-luck launch party back in November 2010 where we got to meet most of the participants and our host Fait Ici. Remember my Best Thai Curry Tofu Ever, our hosts loved it so much they make it once in a while for their lunch menu.

I encourage you to check out the other guest posts on ici et here if you want the real inside-scoop of food in Montreal!
