Today is the big day were I get to announce the prize winners of all those who participated in our Kiva fundraising efforts.

Its soon holiday season and we are all going to be running around getting ready to cook, shop and celebrate. Make sure to come to our Holiday dinner at Atti

But we do not always think of giving to those in need. Last year I started a fund at Kiva under the name of Cheap Ethnic Eatz.

Ever here the saying: Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat every day?. Well this is the idea here. Third world poor entrepreneurs apply for loans with Kiva so they can start a business. Loans are paid back 98.5% of the time. Most of the entrepreneurs are food oriented. Yes, these are loans. So once the money gets paid back we can just reinvest it in a new applicant. I have gotten a lot of repaid loans this year and just kept reinvesting in someone else.

You can give anything you want, even just a 1$. Every bit will help. So how to give me the money? For every dinner we have between now and Christmas no fees are charged for the events but donations for Kiva will be accepted. Or you can send me a donation through Paypal at evylone@hotmail.com. Please write Kiva in the remark box. Sorry I can’t give income tax receipts.

Here is a little presentation of one of the people who received a loan in the name of Cheap Ethnic Eatz to Kiva.

lhom Djuraev is 22 years old. Despite of his young age, he is already supporting his parents and has been working at baking “lepeshka”- traditional Tajik bread. He believes that this business is profitable and is not subject to seasonality. He gets up early and bakes lepeshka and bread so that people have the fresh bread on their tables for breakfast. All the input materials like flour, salt, yeast he purchases in the local market.

Now due to high demand, Ilhom wants to increase the number of his breads so he requests 1000 USD for a term of 12 months. The loan will be spent for purchasing flour and coal for baking the “lepeshka”. In future he is dreaming of opening his own workshop and with the profit, building his own house and family. Ilhom deeply appreciates the trust and support you give him.

Tajikistan is perhaps best known for its rich history, which includes a key post along the Silk Road; the end of Alexander the Great’s rule; and with its famous great thinkers, philosophers, scientists and poets as: Rudaki, Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Firdousi, Omar Haiyam, Jomi, Mavlavi Rumi and many others. The country is home to communities that still speak the ancient Sogdian language, epic mountain passes, and a civilization that dates back to the 4th millennium BC. And, even today, it is a complex mixture of the Islamic faith, Soviet culture, New West culture and Central Asian traditions.

But, Tajikistan is also the poorest of the former Soviet republics. The civil war, which ignited soon after its independence from the U.S.S.R., further damaged the already weak economy. In addition, 93% of the country is mountainous and only 7% of the land is arable. These conditions have resulted in high levels of unemployment and have forced hundreds of thousands to seek work in other countries, mainly Russia. While the people of Tajikistan are working to improve its agricultural production and manufacturing sector, nearly two-thirds of the population still live in abject poverty.
